OVERVIEW

The concept of Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) is increasingly being talked about as a potential component of a national Health reform plan. The heart of the ACO concept is a voluntary grouping of providers paid on a shared savings basis in order to create incentives to eliminate waste, reduce overuse and misuse of care, and support the development of health systems that can deliver high quality, affordable care Proponents of the ACO concept include Mark McClellan, MD, PhD and Elliott S. Fisher, MD, MPH. The concept was initially articulate in "Creating Accountable Care Organizations: The Extended Hospital Medical Staff" (Health Affairs Web Exclusive, Dec. 5, 2006), http://content.healthaffairs.org/cgi/content/ abstract/26/1/w44.
